Liposuction, one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, is used for sculpting and contouring the body by removing excess fat from specific areas. Due to genetic and inborn tendencies, body fat deposits in certain areas more than others. These fat deposits are very resistant to diet and exercise and can really be frustrating.
Good candidates for liposuction are people of relatively normal weight, but who have specific areas of excess fat. Liposuction is a great way to remove troublesome bulges of fat under the skin that do not respond to diet and exercise in such areas as chin, neck, arms, abdomen, buttocks, hips, knees, calves, and ankles and the chest in men.
Dr. Kahn (click for bio) uses the tumescent approach for liposuction. This technique is still the most commonly used method for achieving desired results in contouring areas such as the waist, hips, thighs, abdomen and buttocks.
The technique works by injecting controlled amounts of a special fluid under the skin. This fluid causes the fat to swell such that it is easier to remove. This fluid also numbs and constricts blood flow to the area to reduce blood loss. Because there is so little blood loss, there is minimal bruising.
Medication is also added to this fluid such that post-operative pain is reduced for 18 to 24 hours after the liposuction surgery. After the fluid is injected, a special hollow tube called a cannula is connected to a suction machine and then inserted under the skin. The cannula is moved back and forth to create thousands of tiny tunnels where the fat has been removed. After surgery, a compression garment, or girdle, is put on the patient. The tiny tunnels collapse under the pressure of the garment. The garment is worn most of the time for the next 3 weeks.
Before any liposuction procedure, it is absolutely necessary that you be in the best physical and psychological state. You should stop smoking 2-3 weeks before surgery, in addition to not taking aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory medication, or vitamins.
This liposuction procedure is performed in our state-of-the-art surgical facility, eliminating the costs and need of hospitalization. The surgery usually takes 1-2 hours, depending on the number of areas treated. Our patients tell us that they experience little or no discomfort, and can usually return to work in 2-7 days. As time goes by, your newly sculpted body will be revealed and you will be thrilled with the result!
I went to Dr. David Kahn to have my waist and hips shaped (using liposuction). The results were immediate and incredible! I was in a bikini on vacation in Hawaii with friends I have not seen in years. I got so many compliments and I never felt better. A new mom in a bikini! Thank you for making me look the way I feel inside – beautiful!
