What is Septoplasty?
Do you have trouble breathing through your nose? You may have what is commonly referred to as nasal airway obstruction (or a septal deviation). A common procedure to correct this problem is called septoplasty. Often performed at the same time as rhinoplasty, which addresses the appearance of the nose, septoplasty addresses the function of breathing through it.
Due to genetics or trauma, the septum can bend to one side or another, or an irregular growth of cartilage or bone can develop (known as a septal spur). These abnormalities can cause obstruction of the flow of air through the nose and cause difficulty breathing.
What is involved in the surgery?
Septoplasty is done under sedation or general anesthesia and is usually performed on an outpatient basis. A small incision is made inside the nose and the lining of the septum is detached from the cartilage and bones. The deviated portions of the septum are removed and straightened and the nasal lining is replaced with dissolvable sutures. There are no visible bruises or swelling and this procedure does not require packing of the nose.
How long will my surgery take?
You would arrive approximately an hour prior to surgery. The anesthesiologist and Dr. Kahn will meet with you to answer any questions you may have. You will then be brought into the surgical suite where anesthesia will be administered. The procedure takes approximately 1/2 hour to perform. Following the procedure, you will be brought in the recovery room where you will rest comfortably for about two hours. At that time you may leave with someone driving you home.
What happens after my surgery?
You will return for a follow up visit with Dr. Kahn about a week later. For the next week or two, your breathing will be somewhat compromised due to some swelling inside the nose. Your breathing will become easier with time, and after 2-3 months you will be completely healed.
